Valéry considered individual works of art to be «local appli¬ cations» of what he called the «Great Work», which he defined as «knowledge of work in itself -of transmutation». The aim of this article is to approach the question of the interaction between constructing and knowing in Valéry setting out from his reflections on architecture and dance. He explores the heuristic and cognitive dimension between the exercise and the practice of artistic action, on the one hand, and the investment, the knowledge and the transformation of self required by it, on the other hand (transl. J. Dudley).

Valéry considérait les œuvres d’art individuelles comme des «applications locales» de ce qu’il nommait le «Grand œuvre», qu’il définissait comme «la connaissance du travail en soi -de la transmutation». Cet article se propose d’aborder la question de l’interaction entre le construire et le connaître chez Valéry à partir de ses réflexions sur l’architecture et la danse. Il explore la dimension heuristique et cognitive existant entre l’exercice et la pratique du faire artistique, d’une part, et l’investissement, la connaissance et la transformation de soi que celui-ci suppose, d’autre part.
