Résumé En Fr

This paper discusses Edward Sapir’s aesthetic conception of language and its possible sources. This conception surfaces most conspicuously in the notion of form-feeling, which is mentioned time and again in Language and other texts. Form-feeling, as Sapir tells us, takes its origin from art theory. In the first part of the paper, this notion is set against the background of Sapir’s views about form and pattern and their relation to function and language evolution. The second part of the paper is about the possible origins of the notion of form-feeling. It is argued that these origins are to be found in German-speaking art theory, specifically the notion of Formgefühl. This notion was fleshed out in a strand of aesthetic theory whose psychological orientation was characterized by the great importance it laid on the notion of empathy. To this strand belongs the work of R. Vischer, Wölfflin, Lipps and Dessoir. However, Sapir’s interpretation of the Formgefühl was his own, and reoriented this notion by giving it an “intellectualist” twist.
