The Analysis of a TragedyThe present study sets the purpose of identifying and interpreting the main discursive representations of the Bucharest progrom (21-23 January 1941) as they are often mirrored in the press of the age. Considering the period subject to review, the time which coincides with an accelerated deterioration of the relations between Marshal Antonescu and the Legionary movement, peaking with the launch of the Iron Guard rebellion and, on the other side, with tightening more and more the relations with the Nazi Germany, this work follows the reflection of the national and international political context which determines the different interpretations the media had of this phenomenon. Moreover, as many articles identified this issue in the context of terror measures unleashed by the Legionnaires both against Jews and against Romanians and members of the Army, this work integrates the analysis of the Bucharest pogrom, in a broader interpretative scheme, taking into account the pattern of the national identity under construction. Structured on the analysis of the Romanian periodic publications and daily newspapers (including the democratic press, the Legionary press and the Jewish press) of the period January-March 1941, this study regards the search of the coordinates of the media discourse starting with the identification and the interpretation of the key themes and of the anti-Semitic messages delivered by the press within the weeks preceding the progrom, until the removal of the Legionary movement from the government.
