Résumé En Fr

For the Spaniards, the American space was the site of forced labor for the native populations, despite numerous protests against the abuse inflicted on the latter. This forced labor could take sophisticated forms such as the mita, a revolving, compulsory service in the mines of Potosi, physically exhausting and destructive for communities. But it could take more brutal forms, such as slave hunts, on the pretext of cannibalism, on the borderlands of the empire, areas that served as an outlet for those who had not yet found their place in the central colonial space. These two forms of colonial domination were like the two sides of the same coin.
