Making and Unmaking Groups, Numerical Information on "Difficult-Access Populations": After having underlined the divergent points of view between statistics and sociology on how to approach "difficult-access populations", this article proposes to explore the different manners of defining a distance from a norm, the periphery in relation to a center, and to show how, according to the choice of criteria of inclusion adopted, the size and meaning of the statistical group thus constituted are extremely variable.

Après avoir souligné les divergences de point de vue entre la statistique et la sociologie sur la manière d’appréhender les « populations difficiles à atteindre », cet article se propose d’explorer différentes façons de définir l’écart par rapport à une norme, la périphérie par rapport à un centre et de montrer comment, selon le choix du critère d’inclusion adopté, la taille et le sens du groupe statistique constitué sont extrêmement variables.
