Abstract 0

Capable of acerbic caricature as well as praise, literature has a rather turbulent relationship with the medical profession. Historically speaking, it bears witness to specialized debates and the changing status of physicians. However, it is not a passive mirror. On the contrary, novels have been agents—and sometimes effective cultural weapons—influencing the general perception of the qualities and defects of good and bad doctors.
