This contribution is interested in the historiography of the cartoon The Animals Entering Noah’s Ark (Patrimonio Nacional, inv. 10007058), attributed to Michiel Coxcie (1499-1592). It traces the conditions of its arrival in the Spanish royal collection. The cartoon, tempera-painted on paper and stuck on canvas, was considered to be an additional piece to The Story of Noah (Patrimonio Nacional, cat. TA-37/1-4) inventoried in 1880 and published in 1919. Composed of ten pieces, this hanging commissioned by Philippe II was woven by Willem de Pannemaker between 1563 and 1566 after the destruction of an initial series in 1559, of which only one piece remains, bearing a monogram attributed to Franz Geubels. The cartoon acquired by Alfonso XIII in 1930 was framed and placed in a room of the Royal Palace when it arrived in Madrid. It was recently removed to undergo light restoration work in preparation for the exhibition De El Bosco a Tiziano. Arte y maravilla en El Escorial, at the Royal Palace in Madrid and at El Escorial monastery (September 2013 - January 2014). The cartoon is currently in storage awaiting a research and conservation project, but will soon be given a prestigious position in the new Museum of Royal Collections in Madrid.
