En prenant pour objet et pour fil conducteur d’une enquête de sociologie historique les curricula que l’Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris et la 6e Section de l’École Pratique des Hautes Études consacrent aux études sur les aires culturelles après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l’article questionne des enjeux de labellisation qui se déclinent à plusieurs niveaux : celui du domaine d’études en tant que tel, des catégories structurant l’offre d’enseignements et des intitulés des cours proprement dits. Cette analyse n’est pas dissociée d’un examen des conditions de possibilité intellectuelles, institutionnelles, financières et sociales ainsi que des acteurs et des appuis à la fois nationaux et transatlantiques qui ont permis aux deux établissements d’élaborer de tels programmes et de recourir à ce label. Son usage manifeste une volonté d’intégration des domaines de savoirs jusqu’alors cloisonnés et de constitution d’une (nouvelle) spécialité scientifique ainsi que d’un mode spécifique d’organisation des connaissances. La souplesse dont témoigne ce label révèle cependant des sédimentations, des inerties et des flottements quant à la définition et la délimitation de ce domaine d’études et à ses contenus.

This article focuses on the curricula that the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris and the 6th Section of the École Pratique des Hautes Études devoted to the study of cultural areas after the Second World War, and uses them as the common thread of a study on historical sociology. It questions the challenges of labelling found at several levels: the field of study as such; the categories structuring the educational program; and the titles of the courses themselves. This analysis is associated with an examination of the intellectual, institutional, financial, and social conditions of possibility, and of the national and transatlantic actors and the forms of support that have enabled both institutions to develop such programmes and to use this label. Its use shows an aim to integrate the fields of knowledge that had hitherto been compartmentalized and to establish a (new) scientific speciality as well as a specific way of organizing knowledge. However, the flexibility of this label reveals sedimentation, inertia, and hesitation in the definition and delimitation of this field of study and its contents.

Tomando por objeto y por hilo conductor de una investigación de sociología histórica los programas que el Instituto de Estudios Políticos de París y la 6ta Sección de la Escuela Practica de Altos Estudios dedican a los estudios sobre las áreas culturales después de la Segunda Guerra mundial, este artículo cuestiona los procedimientos de etiquetado que se producen a diferentes niveles : el del campo de estudios, el de las categorías que estructuran la oferta educativa y el del intitulado de los cursos. Este análisis no está disociado de un examen de las condiciones de posibilidad intelectuales, institucionales, financieras y sociales, así como de los actores y de los apoyos simultáneamente nacionales y trasatlánticos que les permitieron a estos establecimientos elaborar esos programas y recurrir a esa etiqueta. Su utilización manifiesta la voluntad de integrar dominios de conocimientos hasta entonces mantenidos separados y de fundar una (nueva) especialidad científica, así como un modo específico de organización de los conocimientos. La flexibilidad que atestigua esta etiqueta revela sin embargo sedimentaciones, inercias e incertidumbres en cuanto a la definición y la delimitación de este dominio de estudios y de sus contenidos.
