Study trips to AuschwitzStudy trips to Auschwitz have gone through important changes during the past several years. However, the visit to such a place presents a series of major educational challenges. Auschwitz was the landmark site of the “Final Solution” and Nazi crimes, the main killing centre of European Jews and also the largest concentration camp complex of Nazi Germany. Transformed into a museum after 1945, the camp has become over the decades the battleground of competing memories. It is now a vast field of ruins whose preservation raises considerable technical and financial issues. The organization of study trips to Auschwitz requires a substantial preparation and should not be considered as memorial pilgrimages or momentary media operations.
