The future of the solutrean culture in northern France. We all know that Solutrean material culture is mainly characterized by the appearance of a specific type of flat, invasive retouch used both for the creation of specific tools and for the meticulous shaping of projectile weapons. This type of retouch was so widely spread in Western Europe that it represents one of the principal markers of the unity of the Solutrean tradition. The disappearance of the use of this retouch is synonymous with the extinction of the Solutrean. This seems to have occurred according to fairly different rates depending on the region. For one part of France, the disappearance was rather abrupt. For some, it would have been caused by the renewal of one part of the population and would correspond to the emergence of the Badegoulian societies. In other regions, it is instead viewed as a progressive phenomenon taking place over a longer period of time. In Spain, this phenomenon is called the “Episolutrean “ while it corresponds in southeastern France to the “Salpetrian ”. So, the difference between the Solutrean and the different traditions that followed it were primarily defined on the basis of this criterion. However, the disappearance of the typical Solutrean retouch alone, for which the symbolic significance is today admitted, could have been only the reflection of the development of certain values or ideologies and not of the total modification of society. To verify this, it is now necessary to determine if other differences between the Solutrean and Badegoulian traditions also exist. Our objective is to be able to identify whether these differences are or are not the reflection of profound transformations in the technological realm. To do so, in this article we have more specifically sought to determine if the foundations of Badegoulian technological traits could have already been present in the Solutrean industry.

On le sait, la culture matérielle solutréenne se caractérise avant tout par l’apparition d’un type de retouche rasante et envahissante aussi bien employé pour la confection d’outils spécifiques que pour le façonnage minutieux des armatures de projectiles. Ce type de retouche s’est si largement diffusé en Europe de l’Ouest qu’il représente l’un des principaux marqueurs de l’unité de la tradition solutréenne. Sa disparition est synonyme de l’extinction du Solutréen. Elle paraît s’effectuer selon des rythmes assez différents en fonction des régions. Pour une partie de la France, elle semble plutôt brusque. Elle aurait été, pour certains préhistoriens, provoquée par un renouvellement d’une partie de la population et correspond à l’émergence des sociétés badegouliennes. Dans d’autres régions, elle est plutôt envisagée comme un phénomène progressif se déroulant sur une plus longue période. En Espagne, cette dernière est appelée “ Episolutréen ” alors que dans le sud-est de la France, elle correspond au “ Salpêtrien ”. Ainsi, la différence entre Solutréen et les diverses traditions qui lui succèdent a principalement été établie à partir de ce critère. Seulement, l’unique disparition de la retouche typique solutréenne, dont la signification symbolique est aujourd’hui admise, aurait très bien pu n’être que le reflet de l’évolution de certaines valeurs ou idéologies et non pas celui d’une modification totale de la société. Pour le vérifier, il est aujourd’hui nécessaire de déterminer si il existe d’autres différences entre les traditions techniques solutréenne et badegoulienne. Notre objectif est d’arriver à identifier si ces dernières sont le reflet ou non de transformations profondes dans le domaine technique. Pour y parvenir, nous avons, dans le cadre de cet article, plus spécifiquement cherché à savoir s’il pouvait exister les prémices de certains traits techniques badegouliens dans l’industrie solutréenne.
