Abstract Fr

The dative-infinitive construction in Russian is an original structure expressing modality in the absence of any modal predicate, only by putting together a dative and an infinitive. The nature of the modality, impossibility or necessity, depends on the presence or absence of negation, as well as on the aspect of the infinitive, (perfective or imperfective aspect).
