AWAKENING TO THE AGEING WE FAIL TO THINK ABOUT Why not approach the human being not as someone who lives in the world, works in it, knows it, but rather as someone who ages in it, withdraws into it, abandons his condition of living being, his inter-est. This is a meaningful withdrawal in its patient waiting on time : a kind of courteous “after you”, a yielding of the self to the other, an initial ethical “handing over”. The works of Emmanuel Levinas and Kafka's Metamorphosis, combined with the geriatric experience, call on us to rethink ageing both as a modality of the psyche and an ethical awakening.
