Amélie Clauzel, « The Mantel spatial method: an application to the case of restaurants », HAL-SHS : l'archive ouverte pour les sciences humaines et sociales, ID : 10.1177/0767370120915575
Most of the usual spatial analysis approaches that attempt to study the effects of inter-personal spacing take place along urban geographical scales, thus applicable to open spaces. This article presents the challenges, limitations and implementation of Mantel's method, which is particularly appropriate for co-presence situations in enclosed spaces. Classically used in biostatistics and ecology, this method is used for the first time in consumer behavior field. When applied to the case of restaurants, it allows us to identify the effects of distance, sociospatial in this case, on the greater or lesser similarity of choices between customers' groups, as well as on their spending. Because it allows a high level of cross-disciplinary use, particularly in management sciences, the Mantel method may interest practitioners seeking to arrange shared spaces (e.g. workspaces, shows, airplanes areas, spas, condominium meetings).
