Résumé
Nicole Le Querler addresses the problems raised by the opposition between the French prepositions par and de. Her approach brings together the syntactic organisation of the sentence and its interpretation. The article highlights the problem of “Par + agent” in passive constructions and seeks to establish the importance of the parameters which operate in the definition of agency. The author establishes a scale of agency, the highest point of which precludes choice of forms. Only in cases of minimal agency is it possible to choose between the two forms.
