Cet article analyse le développement intellectuel du « thatchérisme », la contribution, à ses débuts, d’un réseau transatlantique de think tanks et d’experts dans les années 1970 et la transformation des convictions réformatrices de Mme Thatcher en une idéologie en « isme » Un apport constant d’idées et de pratiques relatives à une politique de libre marché, une fois celle-ci parvenue au pouvoir, a joué un rôle central dans cette évolution. Mme Thatcher a toujours reconnu cette inspiration – personnifiée par Ronald Reagan – lors de ses nombreuses visites triomphales aux États-Unis. Alors que les universitaires et les politiques n’ont cessé de débattre de la réalité de l’impact de la « révolution » thatchérienne, pratiquement aucun n’a cherché à mesurer la dimension « américanisante » de ses efforts. En fait, cette dernière témoigne de la force persistante de l’exemple ou de celle du soft power exercé par des think tanks, des fondations et des pratiques politiques américaines sur les cercles conservateurs en Grande-Bretagne.

Margaret Thatcher’s American Dream : origins and developmentThis paper describes the intellectual development of « Thatcherism » and explains the contribution of a network of transatlantic think-tanks and experts to its origins in the 1970s, and to the transformation of the Mrs Thatcher’s reforming convictions into an ‘ism’ when in power. Central to this evolution was a constant supply of free-market policy ideas and practices from the US. Mrs Thatcher always acknowledged this inspiration – personified by Ronald Reagan – on her many triumphal visits there. While academics and politicians have ceaselessly debated the real impact of the Mrs Thatcher’s ‘revolution’, almost none have calculated this Americanising dimension of her effort. In reality it is a testimony to the enduring force of example, or ‘soft power’, of certain American think-tanks, foundations and political practices in conservative circles in Britain.
