Le sociologue du militaire « embarqué », pour reprendre une terminologie journalistique, se voit inséré dans un réseau étroit de normes professionnelles. Cet insider doit articuler en effet deux registres, l’un scientifique, l’autre lié à son environnement de travail, en l’occurrence militaire.La construction d’une définition de l’ insider, comme antonyme de l’ outsider d’Howard Becker, offre alors l’opportunité de mettre en évidence le jeu avec et entre ces deux registres de normes. À chaque étape d’une recherche, depuis sa conception, sa réalisation jusqu’à la restitution des résultats, la question de la légitimité du sociologue du militaire insider apparaît. Elle induit alors le développement de stratégies chez le chercheur qui, si elles ne sont pas spécifiques à l’étude du monde militaire, doivent y être acclimatées.

Military sociology by Ministry of Defense’ Sociologists : is it an insiders’ sociology ? The sociology of the « embedded » sociologist, to take back a journalistic terminology, gets into a narrow network of professional rules. The insider have to articulate schematically two registers, one of them scientific, and the other linked to his work environment, actually military.The construction of a definition for the insider, as an antonym to the Outsider of Howard Becker, offers then the opportunity to put in evidence the game with and between these two registers of rules. At each stage of the research, since its conception, its realization until the restitution of results appears the question about the military sociologist insider’s legitimacy.It leads the researcher then to develop strategies, which if they are not specific to the study of the military institution, then they must be adapted.
