The Beauty of the Male Body in the Roman World: Recent Studies and New Questions. Numerous studies have been devoted to masculinity in the Roman world over the past twenty years that raise questions about the nature of male beauty. In Latin texts several types of beauty appear: the beauty of the honorable Roman citizen, the seduction of the pueri delicati, and the perfect beauty of heroes in epic fiction. These distinctions refer to an opposition between the real beauty of the living body and ideal beauty. Defining ideal beauty involves questions on the human body, especially in medical texts, and on the art that represents it.

Les nombreuses études qui ont été consacrées depuis une vingtaine d'années à la masculinité dans le monde romain permettent de s'interroger sur ce qu’est la beauté masculine. Dans les textes latins, apparaissent plusieurs types de beauté : la beauté honorable du citoyen romain, la séduction des pueri delicati, la beauté parfaite des héros dans la fiction épique. Ces distinctions renvoient à une opposition entre beauté réelle du corps vivant et beauté idéale. La définition de celle-ci passe par un questionnement sur le corps humain, notamment dans les textes médicaux, et sur l'art qui le reproduit.
