Une pratique non spécialisée de l’archéologie pouvant s’étendre jusqu’à la préhistoire caractérise l’abbé Jean-Benoît Cochet (1812-1875), qui entretint une collaboration et une correspondance avec Jacques Boucher de Perthes (1788-1868), en particulier lors des fouilles qui aboutirent à inventorier l’habitat préhistorique et son environnement, jusqu’alors inconnus, dans la région d’Amiens et d’Abbeville. Il était aussi membre de la Société d’Émulation d’Abbeville. Les outils (haches) retrouvées par Boucher de Perthes, attestent-elles une activité humaine antérieurement au déluge ? Si oui, une des difficultés était l’ancienneté de l’homme sur terre. Une autre difficulté était l’identification des diverses couches, celle attribuable au déluge (à laquelle certains tenaient encore en plein xixe siècle) et celles attribuables à d’autres cataclysmes.

Another difficulty was the identification of the various layers, that attributable to the flood (which some still held in the middle of the 19th century) and those attributable to other cataclysms.
