Adopted in January 2019, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other Rural Workers appears as a way to fight against the situation of rural workers around the world, suffering from hunger, inequality, discrimination and even violence. The grassroots movement of La Vía Campesina, officially founded in Mons, Belgium, in 1993, joined forces with Indonesian protesters after the fall of the Suharto regime in 1998 to initiate a process of conceptualisation of peasants' rights. After they established a presence at the United Nations, the drafting of a declaration was promoted at the Human Rights Council by its Advisory Committee, resulting in the creation of a working group to negotiate the Declaration. Facing resistance from some States during the negotiation, the text defended and proposed by the Advisory Committee, based on the work of La Vía Campesina, was finally adopted, albeit in a more refined version.
