En France la fonction de direction financière naît au début du XXe siècle au sein des services centraux des entreprises. Elle ne se distingue pas encore de la fonction administrative. Peu à peu, comme le montre, entre autres, l’exemple de Saint-Gobain qui sert de fil rouge à ce texte, elle s’émancipe et devient après la Seconde Guerre mondiale une direction autonome. Dès la fin des années 1960 et le début des années 1970 commence un long travail de professionnalisation, notamment en accompagnant le développement stratégique et opérationnel des grandes entreprises. Puis à partir des années 1980 le métier se fragmente pour déboucher sur différentes modalités d’occupation de la fonction. Mais le développement des centres de services partagés et la digitalisation diminuent sa sphère d’influence et menacent la profession.

The evolution of the profession of financial officer in France: origins, competencies, trajectoriesFinancial Services emerged as a department in French firms at the beginning of the 20th century. However, it was yet not distinct from the administrative function. The example of Saint-Gobain illustrates how the department gained its autonomy after the Second World War. From the end of the sixties or the beginning of the seventies, the financial services department engaged in a long process of professionalization to accompany the strategic and operational development of large companies. From the eighties, the profession of financial officers became increasingly fragmented to cope with the different missions it was being assigned. The development of shared service centers and digitalization, however, have been diminishing its sphere of influence and threatening the profession.
