« La Terre est un animal ». Religion naturelle, cycle de l’eau et circulation monétaire pendant la Révolution

La Révolution française est marquée par un renouveau de l’idée ancienne selon laquelle la Terre serait comparable à un gigantesque animal, ou à un organisme vivant fonctionnant à la manière d’une machine hydraulique. Nous explorons les liens entre cette métaphore et les enjeux politiques liés à l’essor d’un nouvel État républicain. Alors que le nouveau régime se sépare de l’Église et introduit la liberté des cultes, l’idée de Terre comme animal sert en premier lieu à bâtir une nouvelle religion civile et naturelle donnant une part notable au culte des astres. Elle sert en second lieu à penser les questions environnementales : le déboisement et les marécages sont vus comme un dérèglement du cycle de l’eau et comme les symptômes d’une mauvaise relation entre le Léviathan républicain et la Terre-animal.

At the time of the French Revolution the old idea according to which the Earth was similar to a gigantic animal, or to a live organism functioning somewhat like a pump, regained credentials. This paper explores the links between this metaphor and the political issues involved by the development of a new Republic. As this new political system separates form the Church and introduces freedom of worship, the idea of the Earth as an animal serves first as a way of building a new civil religion based on a natural order, in which a cult of the heavens had particularly high status. It then serves as a way of thinking about the environment : deforestation and marshlands are seen as signs of dysfunction in the water cycle and of a bad relationship between the republican Leviathan and the animal-Earth.
