Retour sur expérience, cet article évoque les questions de méthode soulevées par mon essai de biographie familiale. L’enjeu est multiple : non seulement montrer que notre moi a une histoire et que son analyse contribue à la scientificité de la démarche, mais mobiliser, au sein du texte, un « je » de méthode ; admettre que l’écriture fait partie de l’enquête, sans quoi la production de connaissances reste incomplète ; enfin, sur les traces de Michel de Certeau, rappeler que l’historien fait dialoguer les morts et les vivants. Il s’agit, en un mot, d’être sensible à notre historicité. L’historien fait partie de l’histoire.

The Historicity of the Historian, or the Place of the DeadThis feedback article evokes the methodological questions raised by my essay of family biography. The stakes are multiple: showing that our self has a history and that its analysis contributes to the scientificity of the approach, as well as mobilizing a methodological “I” within the text; admitting that writing is part of the enquiry, without which the production of knowledge remains incomplete; and, finally, following in the footsteps of Michel de Certeau, recalling that the historian brings the dead and the living into dialogue. The idea, in a word, is to be sensitive to our historicity. The historian is part of history.
