Cette contribution interroge la façon dont la littérature allemande a abordé le thème de l’unification allemande ces trente dernières années. Elle présente différentes générations d’auteurs dont les œuvres se sont fait l’écho des transformations historiques, politiques et sociales déclenchées par la chute du Mur et l’unification des deux états allemands. Si les écrivains de RDA regrettent la disparition d’une utopie sociale mal réalisée, leurs petits-enfants et arrière-petits-enfants peinent à comprendre ce passé tout en en subissant toujours les conséquences. Alors que les formes littéraires varient d’un auteur à l’autre, d’une époque à l’autre – on constate que l’humour et la satire étaient très présents au début et que le ton devient plus sobre et réfléchi avec le temps qui passe – les préoccupations restent constantes. Le thème des changements radicaux et de la perte des repères après 1989 est relayé par le questionnement des plus jeunes sur leur identité, leurs origines, chacun interrogeant à sa façon les marques de l’histoire sur les individus. Dans l’ensemble, la littérature laisse peu de place à une vision réjouissante de l’unification et de ses conséquences, scrutant davantage des constellations conflictuelles.
German unification in the mirror of literatureThis article examines how German literature has presented the topic of German unity over the past thirty years. It introduces different generations of authors whose works reflect the historical, political and social changes triggered by the fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of the two German states. While the older GDR writers regret the disappearance of a poorly realized social utopia, their grandchildren and great-grandchildren try to understand a past whose consequences still affect them. While the literary forms vary according to author and epoch – humor and satire were very present at the beginning, while the tone became more sober and thoughtful with the passage of time – the concerns remain constant. The theme of the radical changes and loss of reference points after 1989 is carried on in the younger generation through questions of identity and origin, each in their own way questioning the traces that history leaves in individuals. All in all, literature leaves little room for a gratifying view of unification and its consequences; it increasingly focuses on conflict-laden constellations.
Zusammenfassung Die deutsche Einigung im Spiegel der LiteraturDer Beitrag untersucht, wie die deutsche Literatur in den letzten dreißig Jahren das Thema der deutschen Einheit dargestellt hat. Er stellt verschiedene Generationen von Autoren vor, deren Werke die historischen, politischen und sozialen Veränderungen reflektieren, die durch den Fall der Mauer und die Vereinigung der beiden deutschen Staaten ausgelöst wurden. Während die älteren DDR-Schriftsteller das Verschwinden einer schlecht verwirklichten Sozialutopie bedauern, versuchen ihre Enkel und Urenkel eine Vergangenheit zu verstehen, von deren Folgen sie immer noch betroffen sind. Während die literarischen Formen je nach Autor und Epoche variieren – Humor und Satire waren zu Beginn sehr präsent, während der Ton mit dem zeitlichen Abstand nüchterner und nachdenklicher wurde – bleiben die Anliegen konstant. Das Thema der radikalen Veränderungen und des Verlusts von Bezugspunkten nach 1989 wird in der jüngeren Generation durch Fragen nach Identität und Herkunft weitergeführt, wobei jeder auf seine Weise die Spuren hinterfragt, die die Geschichte in den Individuen hinterlässt. Insgesamt lässt die Literatur wenig Raum für eine erfreuliche Sicht auf die Vereinigung und ihre Folgen, sie fokussiert verstärkt konfliktreiche Konstellationen.
