Frédéric Maurin, « Les images du texte : Le Marchand de Venise dans la mise en scène de Peter Sellars », Presses Sorbonne Nouvelle, ID : 10670/1.hier4g
Just as The Merchant of Venice, according to director Peter Sellars, provides a rather accurate vision of contemporary America — in terms of racial discrimination and financial greed — his production offers a radically new image of the play. However, this is achieved not only by updating the dramatic context and using modern technology (especially video monitors and microphones) but also through a close attention paid to the very words, their poetic strength, their far-reaching echoes and poignant significance for today's performers and spectators, and the diversified styles of delivery. Far from blocking out the text, the visuals help to renew the relevance of verbal and aural images.
