Résumé
In Tacitus’ Annals, Books I and II, the speeches contribute to the development of the main character portraits through the gradual incorporation of detail. More precisely, a stylistic study of these speeches reveals the main personality traits specific to each character. Each speech, therefore, varies in tone according to the circumstances of the exchange and of what is at stake. This is so much the case that there corresponds to each speech occurrence one or more linguistic strategies which, when taken together, allow a nuanced character portrait or a well-defined personality trait to become apparent.
