“Being with the Arabs. Final point”: The trajectory and work of Rolland Doukhan, by Ewa TartakowskyAmong Jewish writers who arrived in France in the post-colonial context, Rolland Doukhan occupies a singular place. While sharing certain literary themes and biographical characteristics with other writers of Judeo-Maghrebi origin, he also deals with more contemporary issues linked to the history of his native Algeria. Moreover, all his works feature Arab-Muslim characters. His biographical trajectory also sheds light on his literary preoccupations: an anti-colonial militant, member of the Algerian Communist Party and then of the French Communist Party, he formed friendships with Muslim writers. An analysis of his career thus reveals the ideal of a writer of Judeo-Maghrebin origin in France, thereby introducing an understanding of the rather rare “dissident” trajectories of anti-colonialist Jews.
