Résumé En Fr

The Vergilian catabasis in the VIth book of the Aeneid constitutes the first known occurrence of the "journey to the realm of the dead" in Latin epic poetry. Critics have sometimes been embarrassed by its threefold dimension : mythological, philosophical, historical ; they have especialy brought out contradictions between the mythical narration and the philosophical argument and have considered the latter as a convenient means to introduce the historical prophecy. Now, the study of the three components of the catabasis reveals its organical unity. The comparison with the Jewish apocalypses is illuminating ; this literary genre, also derived from the divination, rests on three elements whose functions are parallel to those of the components of the catabasis : the symbolical vision, the eschatological explanation and the historical revelation.
