This article argues that Edgar Morin’s epistemology of complexity stems from an understanding of contemporary crisis as revealing a discrepancy between the classic principles of science and new expectations. Crisis, following Morin’s thinking, not only engenders increasing uncertainty, but is also among the barbarities that threaten contemporary societies. Epistemological complexity is the supreme indicator of crisis, and therefore by no means the daily preserve of the cultural sciences alone, since it also undermines the physical, biological, and formal sciences from within. Our focus here is on the potential and theoretical capacity of crisis to determine the possibilities of epistemological complexity.
