Comment saisir et rendre compte de l’émergence et du déploiement de configurations décisionnelles charismatiques ? C’est cette question que l’article aborde à partir de l’analyse de quelques initiatives singulières prises par le général de Gaulle entre la fin du mois de mai 1968 et la fin du mois d’avril 1969. L’interrogation part d’une énigme : comment comprendre que le président de la République qui dispose alors de fortes ressources institutionnelles et politiques se lance dans des décisions extrêmement risquées, spectaculaires, personnalisées : le refus de dévaluer en novembre 1968, l’initiative référendaire lancée en mai 1968, abandonnée puis relancée dès juin, et pour finir l’engagement de sa responsabilité personnelle sur un référendum incertain en avril 1969. On verra que la solution à cette énigme suppose de se dégager du personnage de Gaulle pour aller interroger les propriétés sociales et politiques de la configuration collective qui se met progressivement en place à partir des événements de mai 1968.

Decision-Making and Charisma. General De Gaulle’ Political Moves between May 1968 and April 1969 How can we analytically make sense of the formation and spread of so-called “charismatic” decision-making configurations? The article tries to answer this tricky question by studying some peculiar moves taken by General de Gaulle during the period that stretches from late May 1968 to late April 1969. The question indeed arises out of an enigma: how are we to understand the fact that the President of the Republic, who is then in control of vast institutional and political resources, suddenly begun taking risky, spectacular and highly personalized decisions (like his refusal to devaluate the Franc in November 1968, his referendum initiative in May 1968 – put aside for some weeks, then taken up again in June –, and finally his will to put his own position in the balance on the occasion of a very uncertain referndum in April 1969)? Part of the answer to this enigma lies in an analytical move, away from scrutinizing De Gaulle’s personality and towards the sociological questioning of the social and political peculiarities of the collective configuration of action(s) that institutes itself step by step out of the events of May 68.
