In the Dreyfus case, 22 handwriting experts were called in to testify. At the sentencing trial, four of the five designated handwriting experts confirmed that the memorandum discovered by the Intelligence Service was written in Dreyfus’s hand ; he was then stripped of his rank and deported to French Guiana on 21 December 1895. In 1899, during the trial held before a military tribunal in Rennes, different expert witnesses were called in to testify and they attributed the handwriting on the memorandum to Esterhazy, who confessed. We see here the influence of the anti-semitic context and the pressure of the Army on the experts : expert witness work in handwriting is far from an exact science.
