Formé par son père à l’art de la calligraphie, William Wolkowski combine calligrammatisation et traduction pour redéployer le sens et la forme de textes empruntés à des domaines culturels différents par la langue, le genre et l’activité. Les citations qu’il met en scène sont des extraits, maximes ou mots d’auteur empruntés aussi bien aux grands noms de la littérature (Poe, Ronsard, Maupassant, Schiller), qu’aux scientifiques (Marie Curie), aux religieux (St François d’Assise), aux politiques (Churchill) ou aux vedettes du show-biz (Les Beatles). En multipliant les versions plurilingues de ses calligrammes (jusqu’à 109 langues) Wolkowski s’emploie à édifier un « Espace Géopoétique Européen ». Le livre qu’il a consacré à Apollinaire en 2013 scelle son rapport au genre et son dialogue avec celui qui l’a redécouvert.

Trained by his father in the art of calligraphy, William Wolkowski combines calligrammatization and translation to redeploy the meaning and form of texts borrowed from different cultural fields by language, genre and activity. The quotes he stages are extracts, maxims or author’s words borrowed as much from the great names of literature (Poe, Ronsard, Maupassant, Schiller), as from scientists (Marie Curie), from religious (St François d’Assise), politicians (Churchill) or show biz stars (The Beatles). By multiplying the multilingual versions of his calligrams (up to 109 languages), Wolkowski is working to build an "European Geopoetic Space". The book he devoted to Apollinaire in 2013 seals his relationship to genre and his dialogue with the one who rediscovered it.
