The insertion of women into the domestic space and of men into the public sphere is arguably one of the most solid dynamics of the patriarchal system from antiquity onwards. Similarly, the coincidence of pagan and Christian sources on the importance of the private and familiar sphere, as a meeting place of the early Christian communities, validates and reaffirms the role of women in the dissemination and affirmation of the new religion. This invites us to reflect on the social reality of such an ideal distribution of spaces, and to assess to what extent such female prominence subverts their – topographically and culturally conceived – gender order.
