Le but de cet article est de douter de l’ automatisme supposé en préférant la fonction « critique » de la recherche-action participative et de proposer le principe de faire de la fonction de chaque recherche-action participative une question de choix réfléchi. La fonction « critique » et « conforme » de la recherche-action participative est distinguée et l’ interrelation entre la fonction de chaque recherche-action participative assumée par des participants à la recherche non experts et par le chercheur qui les aide est discutée. Il est recommandé de refléter sur la fonction et les objectifs assumés des participants non experts afin de pouvoir établir l’ objectif de la recherche-action participative qu’ il est possible d’ atteindre.

The aim of this article is to cast doubt on supposed automatism in preferring a “critical” function of participative action research and to propose the principle of making the function of every single participative action research a matter of reflected choice. “Critical” and “conforming” functions of participative action research are distinguished and the interrelation between the function of every single participative action research which is assumed by non-expert research participants and by the researcher who assists them is discussed. Reflecting on the function and aims assumed by non-expert participants is recommended so that a realistic goal of participative action research can be established.
