La mort du torero, autrefois constitutionnelle de la corrida, devient aujourd’hui accidentelle, mais son ombre demeure. Dès la codification de 1796, les actions se ritualisent, sous l’aspect festif d’un scénario mimant une exécution publique rigoureusement juridicisée. Au XXe siècle, de combattant, le matador, devient artiste. Dans les arts plastiques, deux œuvres érotico-pornographiques témoignent d’un environnement symbolique exacerbé, mais dans l’arène, l’écorchoir n’est pas un mythe.

In years gone by, the bullfighter’s death was a constituent part of bullfighting. Today it occurs only by accident, but its shadow lingers on. With the codification of bullfighting in 1796, practices in the bullring became ritualised and resembled the staging of a rigorously judicialised public execution in festive mode. In the 20th century, the matador went from being a fighter to an artist. Two erotic-pornographic works from the plastic arts bear witness to the exacerbated symbolic context in which bullfighting is steeped. In the ring however, the slaughterhouse is not just a myth.
