Résumé En

Writing his treatise for a large public of non specialists, Vegetius has to put Chiron’s information in a few words, and complete Pelagonius with at least one lost latin source, common to them. He avoids the excesses of medical bilingualism: greek words transposed in latin (aterapeutus, discolus, parastaticari), many hapaxes in -tio (glutinatio, causticatio, fouitio), preferring verbs to abstract terms. Latin substantives in -tura are more numerous and well preserved from the lost source: eiectura, contusura are restored; some latin hapaxes from rare greek forms (*exbersis, leptopyrosis) are maintained. Vegetius chooses an understandable but precise medical lexicon and also bears precious witness to breeders’ jargon.
