Les papyrus grecs et démotiques concernant le clergé égyptien ne permettent pas de l’envisager comme un corps ayant une identité sociale commune. C’est plutôt dans le domaine culturel, de préservation de la tradition religieuse égyptienne, qu’il faut chercher les éléments identitaires du clergé autochtone, notamment dans les associations cultuelles. Codifiées par la volonté du clergé et des fidèles, elles sont l’expression d’un sentiment identitaire commun qui touche au noyau le plus profond de la civilisation égyptienne : ses dieux et sa conception de l’au-delà.

Between Codification and Diversification: The Egyptian Clergy in the Greco-Roman Times and Its Supposed Identity.Greek and Demotic evidence concerning the Egyptian clergy hardly makes it possible to consider it as cohesive corps, able to find a common social identity. More than other things, we have to look for the elements of the identity of the native clergy in the cultural field of Egyptian religious traditions and beliefs, notably in cult associations. Codified at will of the clergy and believers together, associations are the expression of a common feeling of belonging, that touches the very core of the Egyptian civilisation : their gods and the conception of the afterlife.
