A Remote Gallic Salt Making Facility in Gouy-Saint-André « Le Rossignol » (Pas-de-Calais) : a General IntroductionThe Pas-de-Calais Departmental Archaeology Centre carried out, on the territory of the commune of Gouy-Saint-André, in the « Le Rossignol » locality, the excavation of an artificial evaporation salt production workshop dating to the Gallic period. It was identified in an area of land hardly larger than 200 m2 in size which belongs to an occupation enclosure in which stretches of ditch could be made out. The main focus was accordingly upon a salt making workshop, in which seven phases were defined for a sequence of four furnaces of the type with grids opening in a diametrically opposed direction. The workshop was in operation around the IInd-Ist centuries BC. Its location around 40 km away from today’s shoreline requires a further reflection on the modalities of acquisition of the raw material, which will add to our knowledge of the history of the production of Gallic salt in the north of France.
