The continuity between the abandoned fragments from the time before the exile and the work on Messingkauf begun in 1939 allows us to relativise a traditional vision of Brechtian pedagogy. The periodisation around the rupture of 1933 allows us to understand the role of irony and the ridiculing of the self that underlies the epilogue of The Good Person of Sichuan. Brecht invites the reader to consider the latter as a case study for his applied epic theory. The pedagogical relationship between the actor and the spectator appears as a minimal constant of the Brechtian lesson guaranteeing its survival through historical contingencies.
