Bodies, Sexuality, and Gender in Ancient Greek and Roman Societies.Gender and sexuality studies in Greece and in Rome provide a fundamental development to the history of the ancient body. At the end of the twentieth century, the theoretical import of gender studies, of women’s studies, and of Michel Foucault’s work has played an important part in the orientations of today’s research. Early twenty-first-century research has tended to focus on defining all relevant Greek and Roman categories in the perception of bodies (gender, age, social status, physical appearance, erotic practices, deportment, gestures, quality of voice): the variable importance given to sexual organs in the distinction between bodies, the progress of archeology devoted to identification of skeletons, ancient eroticism, the issue of sexual work in antiquity, all these are subjected to a renewed interest. These studies where archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, political, and social history interact offer a reading aware of the various conceptions of the body according to historical context and to the pragmatical nature of the documents.
