Résumé
In as much as it refers to a temporality, that of the Greek Antiquity, the spatial concept “the Mediterranean” adjusts to mutations in the reception of the Antique in France at the beginning of the twentieth century. As from the year 1880, it is less the contents of the Greek heritage that are questioned than the obligatory veneration accompanying them. In the process of reactualization of the old, the Modern French writers had to submit the Mediterranean image to a necessary denigration. All the attributes of the Mediterranean (dimensions, colours, symbols, etc.) that were once admired are deconstructed, before being re-invented.
