Schultz et le capital humain : une trajectoire intellectuelle

L’apport de Becker [1964] à la théorie du capital humain s’est rapidement imposé comme une référence. Pourtant l’impulsion initiale donnée au programme est attribuée à la figure de Schultz. Schultz a en effet été à l’origine d’une réflexion conceptuelle particulièrement riche qui a contribué de manière déterminante au développement du concept et de la théorie du capital humain. L’objectif de cet article est de retracer la trajectoire intellectuelle de Schultz relative au concept de capital humain afin d’éclairer la richesse – relativement sous-estimée, par rapport aux travaux de Becker notamment – de son apport en ce domaine.

The contribution of Gary Becker [1964] to human capital theory quickly became a reference. Yet the initial impulse given to the research program is attributed to Schultz’s figure. Schultz was at the origin of a rich conceptual reflection which contributed in a decisive way to the development of the concept and of the theory of human capital. The aim of this article is to trace Schultz’s intellectual trajectory on the concept of human capital in order to emphasize the importance of its contribution – which was relatively underestimated, compared to Becker’s work – to this field.
