La lecture de The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym from Nantucket reste surprenante plus d’un siècle et demi après sa parution. Le récit de Pym apparaît comme l’histoire oniroïde d’une vie brisée et il ne peut manquer de nous faire évoquer celle de son auteur. Avec Pym, mais aussi Dupin, Edgar Allan Poe crée-t-il des doubles littéraires qui pourraient représenter le transfert sur l’œuvre, voire le transfert à l’œuvre, par lequel le héros démasquerait comme formation de l’inconscient la vie psychique de son auteur ? « La vérité n’est pas toujours dans un puits », nous dit Dupin. Nous proposons de mettre cette hypothèse à l’épreuve de la surface du texte en mettant en évidence le profil psychopathologique de Pym et en établissant quelques liens avec la problématique de Poe telle qu’elle a pu se dégager des études de ses biographes et de ses commentateurs.

The reading of The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym from Nantucket still surprises more than one hundred and fifty years after its apparition. Pym’s story seems to be an oniroid account of a broken life which can’t help but evoke that of its author. With but also Dupin, does Poe create litterary doubles which could represent the transference on the work, even the working transfert by which the hero unmasks the psychic life of the author as an unconscious-shaping process? « The truth is not always in a well », Dupin tell us. It’s worth putting this hypothesis to the test of the text’s surface by highlighting Pym’s psychopathological profile and establishing a few links with Poe’s problems, such as they appear when studying his biographies and textual commentaries.
