Au début du xxe siècle, le philosophe italien Benedetto Croce (1866-1952) a adressé de vives critiques à l’histoire des idées politiques. Croce a pourtant lui-même peu pratiqué un exercice historiographique à l’égard duquel il se montrait particulièrement exigeant, et le chapitre qu’il consacre aux idées politiques dans sa Storia dell’età barocca in Italia (1929) est resté méthodologiquement très timoré. Le présent article étudie en quoi l’historien italien Federico Chabod (1910-1960) a produit une histoire des idées politiques qui se rapproche de l’idéal crocien d’une histoire « éthico-politique » et qui a rencontré la sympathie de son contemporain français Alphonse Dupront (1905-1990).

In the early 20th century, the italian philosopher Benedetto Croce (1866-1952) directed a strong criticism at the history of political ideas. Croce himself scarcely practised this historiographic exercise on which he placed considerable demands and his methodology in the chapter of his Storia dell’età barocca in Italia (1929) dedicated to political ideas remains rather fainthearted. We study how the Italian historian Federico Chabod (1910-1960) brought forth a history of political ideas approximating the crocian ideal of an “ethical political” history, and won the sympathy of his French contemporary Alphonse Duprond (1905-1990).
