Presence of the Holocaust in Israeli cinema: a film filled with nightmaresIsraeli cinema, rather deeply haunted by the memory of the Holocaust, has almost never produced a film that puts deportation, the concentration camps, or extermination of the Jews of Europe, on screen. Thus the Holocaust is manifested almost exclusively on the backbone of the aftermath, through the survivors of trauma and the wounds that never healed. Several factors, being ideological, economic, topographical, aesthetic or moral explain the almost complete absence of fictional representation of the traumatic events of World War II. But the film presence of the Holocaust has evolved and has changed the perspective on it and its victims, both by society and by the Israeli historiography.
