Après un survol des positions de Freud et de Lacan quant aux symptômes et à leur destin en fin de cure, et après avoir distingué les symptômes et le Sinthome, l’auteur examine quelques destins possibles du symptôme (persistance et identification au symptôme, allègement ou disparition du symptôme par levée du refoulement et réalisation sans détour des pulsions ou par leur sublimation). Il envisage aussi quelques obstacles à l’allègement des symptômes : leur surdétermination, la satisfaction qu’ils procurent et le masochisme fondamental.

The author starts with an overflight of the positions of Freud and Lacan regarding the symptom and his fate at the end of a psychoanalytical cure. He hereby makes the distinction between the symptoms and what Lacan identifies as Sinthome. He then examines more in detail some possible fates of the symptom. For instance: a persistence of and an identification with the symptom, a symptomatic relief or even the disappearance of the symptom as a consequence of the lifting of repressions and the realisation of the thrives or by their sublimation. He also considers what could be an obstacle to symptomatic relief. Namely: the overdetermination of the symptoms, the satisfaction they give to the patient and finally the fundamental masochism.
