Conceptions of the « Normal Family » Underlying the Forms of Social Support Provided by the Public Welfare System in French-Speaking SwitzerlandBased on our study of domestic normativity as it relates to the family’s economic function, this article focuses on interventions by social workers (SW) working within the public welfare system in French-speaking Switzerland. We analyse the underlying rationale for action that they mobilize to justify their interventions within the legal framework. The results of the study show that the SWs conceptions of the « normal family » vary according to the type of family problem encountered and to the SW’s professional experience, and that these significantly influences the gendered division of labour within the family group.
