A travers A Few Footprints, l’autobiographie de John Passmore Edwards, philanthrope et autodidacte victorien qui consacra une bonne partie de sa vie à financer la construction de bibliothèques, cet article traite de l’accès à la lecture et à l’éducation au dix-neuvième siècle au Royaume-Uni, époque bénie du « self-help », tout en analysant le rapport de l’auteur à sa bibliothèque idéale, ainsi que la nature du patrimoine qu’il a légué.

Starting from A Few Footprints, an autobiographical account by John Passmore Edwards, a Victorian philanthropist and self-made man who devoted a large part of his life to funding the construction of libraries, this article deals with the access to reading and education in 19th century Britain, the golden age of self-help. It also analyzes the way in which the author implicitly presents his own ideal library, as well as the nature of his legacy.
