Quand et comment les dix derniers volumes de l’ Encyclopédie publiés en une seule fois fin 1765 ont-ils été élaborés ? Pour répondre à cette question, l’article réunit tous les éléments disponibles permettant d’établir une chronologie relativement fine de la composition progressive des volumes de discours (par opposition aux volumes de planches). Ils furent achevés sous le régime de permission tacite entre 1762 et septembre 1765, après la crise de 1758-1759 qui menaça l’existence de toute l’entreprise. Les niveaux d’opacité se multipliaient jusque-là pour faire de la séquence des dix volumes interdits un point aveugle sur le plan chronologique. Après avoir évacué certaines objections déconcertantes qui obstruaient la recherche, l’article reprend l’ensemble du dossier et précise pour la première fois les données de base du problème. De toutes nouvelles questions peuvent alors se poser. On envisage ainsi l’idée d’une éventuelle conclusion de l’ Encyclopédie repérable à travers quelques articles stratégiques rédigés au terme de l’aventure éditoriale.

Given that the last ten volumes of the Encyclopédie were published in one go at the end of 1765, when and how were they worked out? The article sets out to provide an answer by gathering together all available elements for the making of a relatively finely tuned chronology of the progressive composition of the texts (as opposed to the volumes of plates). These were worked on between 1762 and September 1765, during the regime of tacit permission after the 1758-1759 crisis that had jeopardized the existence of the whole venture. The sequence of the ten forbidden volumes has been obscured to the point of becoming a blind spot in the overall chronology of the enterprise. Leaving aside a few disconcerting objections which were impeding further research, the article takes up the whole file again and examines for the first time the basic facts. New questions can now emerge, and a possible conclusion to the Encyclopédie may be envisaged on the basis of several strategic entries which were drafted towards the end of the editorial adventure.
