Transcommunality: A 21st Century Social Compact for Urban Revitalization in the United States

On voit apparaître aujourd’hui aux États-Unis un important mouvement urbain pacifiste qui vise à mettre un terme à la violence des gangs et des jeunes. La plupart des organisations qui sont impliquées sont hispaniques et afro-américaines. Beaucoup travaillent ensemble. Citons parmi celles qui coopèrent « The National Coalition of Barrios Unidos/United Neighborhoods », « Stop the Violence-Institute the Peace », « Black Berets for Justice » et « The Black Awareness Community Development Organization ». À une époque où les scientifiques autant que les journalistes ont toujours tendance à centrer les problèmes américains sur la dichotomie Noirs-blancs et où les conflits ethniques peuvent encore s’accroître, on peut espérer que ces efforts qui se développent à la base, en milieu urbain, pourraient conduire, s’ils réussissent, à une véritable renaissance au XXIe siècle des communautés aux États-Unis.

Today a major urban peace movement aimed at ending youth and gang violence is growing around the country. A large number of the organizations involved in this movement are Latino and African-American. Many of them are working cooperatively with each other. Examples of such cooperating organizations include «The National Coalition of Barrios Unidos/United Neighborhoods», «Stop the Violence-Institute the Peace», «Black Berets for Justice», and «The Black Awareness Community Development Organization». In a time which sees continued media/academic tendencies to dichotomize U.S. issues in terms of «blacks and whites» and in a time which sees the potential of increasing ethnic conflict, such cooperative efforts are an important and inspiring development from which much can be learned. If such grassroots urban efforts succeed they have the possibility of creating a 21st century community renaissance in the United States.
