Nous présentons et commentons un article publié en 1908 par le mathématicien Émile Borel, dans la Revue du Mois dont il était rédacteur en chef. En prenant comme référence un article publié par George Palante la même année, Borel prend comme objet central la question de l’acceptabilité individuelle et sociale du calcul des probabilités, ainsi que la nécessité d’en faire un objet de connaissance commune. Cette argumentation est rédigée à une époque où les bouleversements induits par l’impact des probabilités sur notre perception du monde ne sont encore que peu connus. Elle doit se comprendre sur le fond des débats contemporains autour des notions de solidarité et d’individualisme.

Here is presented and commented an article published in 1908 by the mathematician Emile Borel, in the journal Revue du Mois of which he was the chief-editor. Borel, taking as a reference an essay published by Georges Palante the very same year, focuses on the question of the individual and social acceptability of probability theory, as well as on the necessity to make it an object of common knowledge. This piece of reasoning was published at a time when the upheavals caused by the impact of probabilities on our perception of the world were still hardly known. It must then be understood in the light of contemporary debates on the notions of solidarity and individualism.
